The Voyatzis family has been producing wine since the 18th century, which was also sold in the family Inn, in the town of Katerini, in Northern Greece. At that time, the area was a major trading hub of southeastern Europe and Velvento’s wine was known from Italy and Vienna up to the Balkans and Istanbul.
Today, many generations later, Giannis Voyatzis is head enologist and owner of the modern vineyard, which was created in an old vine of the Voyatzis Family. Giannis has studied chemistry in Athens and did his Ph.D in enology in Bordeaux, returning to Greece in 1985 to work for many years in some of the most prestigious wineries. He is recognised as one of the top experts in the Greek noble red variety of Xinomavro as well as a master of blends between Greek and international varieties.
The winery and the vineyard are located on the shore of lake Polyfyto, among the mountains, which creates a very favorable microclimate. The lake has a very rich ecosystem, including deer, migratory birds and many other animals which are frequently seen grazing on the edge of the vineyards reaching to the water. These animals are depicted in many of the estate’s labels. Giannis has a deep respect for the magnificent nature surrounding the winery and is proud to be a certified organic producer.
